Population impacts all -- Some more than others. Relatively few have the means to pretend there will not be consequences. They hold power while most people on Earth do not even have a bank account.
There are parallel “universes” that are virtually closed systems. There are staggering examples of inequalities with lifestyles that are extreme and unnatural in their “foot prints.”
The sad irony is that human society, when viewed through the lens of all recorded history, resembles a pyramid. Not unlike the structures in Egypt build for the Sun god: Extreme bounty at the tippy-top and crushed crumbs at the bottom. From Wall St. hucksters to hunter-gatherers in the Rain Forest…
Sad because it calls in to question and diminishes our American experiment. Maybe the pyramid model is the model for human existence. Maybe our representative democracy that has survived for over 200 years is merely a “blip” – an anomaly on our time here…
Is it always in our nature to default to an autocrat? To a strong man? To a Sun god?
I fear that the pyramid may be the natural order, but I hope to God it is not. My hope stems from the fact that perhaps progress takes thousands of years to develop and to become real. In a fundamental sense, it’s basically overcoming the fear each other. Earth’s overcrowding may have the positive effect of pushing us all together until we realize our similarities vastly outweigh our differences."
